“But”, “Although”和”However”都是中文「但是」、「可是」的意思，既然意思一樣，這三個英文單字的用法有不同嗎?

當”But”和”Although”用作連接詞(Conjunction)的時候，在大多數情況下，它們是可以交換使用的。

但如果要認真分辨”But”和”Although”的用法，那就是:

(1) Laura ordered steak for me, but I’m a vegetarian.Laura幫我點了牛排，但我是素食者喔。

例句(1)用”But”讓前後句的矛盾性更明顯。

(2) Laura ordered steak for Jason, although he usually orders fish.Jason通常會點魚，Laura卻幫他點了牛排。

(3) Jane said the hit-and-run driver drove a blue car, but I think it was red.Jane說那個肇事逃跑的司機開藍色車，但我記得車是紅色的。

(4) We speak Chinese at home, although we sometimes speak English.我們在家會說中文，但有時候還是會說英文。

在文法上來說以上的例句用”But”或”Although”都是沒有錯的。

有時候”Although”會出現在句子的開頭。

(5) Although I can write songs, I can’t sing.雖然我會作曲，但我不會唱歌。

介紹完”But”和”Although”的用法，一起來看看”However”的用法吧。

“However”是副詞，它可以用來帶出一句新的獨立句子，而這句新句子的意思跟前一句是有矛盾的。

(6) Jane said the hit-and-run driver drove a blue car. However, I think the car was red.Jane說那個肇事逃跑的司機開藍色車，但我記得那台車是紅色的。

(7) This is a good movie. However, the lead actor can’t act.這是一部好電影，但男主角演得很爛。

在這裡順便介紹”Despite”和”In spite of”的用法。

“Despite”和”In spite of”是介系詞，它們也是「雖然」、「可是」的意思，但跟”But”, “Although”和”However”的用法有點不同，”Despite”和”In spite of”後面要用名詞或加了”~ing”的動詞。

(8) Despite the rain, we decided to go camping.雖然下雨，我們還是決定去露營。

(9) In spite of having a lot of money, Jack is a penny-pincher.雖然Jack很有錢，但他很吝嗇。
